CBD Effects Opioid Use

Studies on CBD and its use for pain, are starting to be published more often.  For years people have voiced their opinions on the cannabis plant and how it helps with pain, but actual clinical studies are few.  We here at Artistic Organics like to share studies, especially those that are easy to read and understand.  Below is a study on CBD and Opioids. We’d like to point out a few items of note.  (Items in purple are taken directly from the article with our comments in black)

“patients between 30 and 65 years old with chronic pain who have been on opioids for at least 1 year. Data were collected at three different time points: baseline, 4, and 8 weeks.” ” Improvement was evaluated using four indices: Pain..” “…Sleep Quality…” “… Pain Intensity…” “…and Patient Health Questionnaire”   We like how this study used patients who have been on opioids for awhile and they evaluated at intervals using criteria that were typical and useful for the average reading the study who is using opioids.

“Chronic pain is a major cause of disability worldwide with a prevalence rate of 15% to 30% in the general adult population, and more than 500 billion dollars annual costs in the United States. Unfortunately, multiple reports are showing a lack of satisfactory results with available pharmacotherapy with less than 70% of patients having pain relief.”  Chronic pain is certainly commonplace today.  With less than 70% of patients not getting the relief they need from Rx, it is an issue we read about in the news media on a weekly basis.  People are looking for alternatives.

“Over half of chronic pain patients (53%) reduced or eliminated their opioids within 8 weeks after adding CBD-rich hemp extract to their regimens. Almost all CBD users (94%) reported quality of life improvements” These percentages are very strong reminders that there are options out there other than a typical Rx.  We here at Artistic Organics believe that full-spectrum, whole plant CBD has the highest success rate of helping with chronic pain.

“Almost all participants (91) used … (~30 mg) daily”  Our chart is on our website and in this article: #3 How Much Should I Take? We suggest the amount of CBD typically used is between 20-30mg daily.  Clients with chronic conditions, and pain certainly is one of those, report they take around 30+mg daily.  This study supports the feedback we’ve received from clients.

“Primary Outcomes  Fifty of the 94 (53.2%) participants using the CBD hemp extract were able to reduce opioid medications at week 8. Additional reductions in polypharmacy on the medication receipt were noted; six participants reported reducing or eliminating their anxiety medications, and four participants reported reducing or eliminating their sleep medication. None of the three participants who declined to use CBD hemp extract reduced their opioid medication at any interval.”  The outcome gives people hope that there is an option out there to help possibly reduce medication usage.  We hope that people interested in reducing their Rx and opioid use will share this article with their Dr’s and see what CBD can do for them.  Email us, or come by either of our stores for a free consultation.
