Historical Hemp in Clothingadmin
Hemp has been used for thousands of years in all forms of clothing and industrial applications. But did you know it was used to make ship sales and the word ‘canvas’ comes from the word ‘cannabis’? Did you know the US farmed over a million acres of hemp for industrial purposes in the 1940’s? But, by 1945 all of the farms were closed down.
Hemp has been used throughout American history for clothing and now that it is becoming popular to farm again, companies like Levi’s is working to put it into future clothing. Plus hemp uses very little water compared to cotton and produces more fiber than cotton.
Manufacturers are looking to hemp because it creates a soft, durable, breathable fiber. As American farmers begin to grow hemp again, we will see a change in our American textile industry.
We, here at Artistic Organics like to keep up with the hemp industry and clothing is just one part. Our monthly classes highlight changes in the industry and fun facts like the ones mentioned above. Come by our Frisco store for the free monthly class. Just RSVP on our Eventbright page by clicking here. Classes are posted the first week of each month.
